“In 2005 I was privileged to be nominated to participate in Sculpture Sonoma 2005, a multi-organizational salute to Sonoma County sculptors and sculpture. Simultaneously, I had a one-person show of my work at Withywindle Gallery in Guerneville, California, a new gallery devoted to stone sculpture.

"2006 marks the 30th anniversary of the start of my career as a sculptor. From the first piece, I knew that I had found the outlet for my creative energies that I had been seeking. I still would like to write, but something in my wiring works naturally with carving in a way that no other activities can match.

"This year I feel like I’m tying up loose ends in preparation for a new outburst of work. This website has been updated by Rebekah Schmitt as part of putting my house in order. I’ve produced a new (double photo) business card which is more interesting than it sounds. And, as always, the exigencies of survival dictate how much of my time is spent.

"I am assessing the direction I want to go with my work. As I’ve said many times, I usually don’t have a concrete image in mind when I begin carving, but more and more there are forms I wish to investigate. For me it seems harder to find the right stone to embody a specific form than to find a good stone with a form of its own seeking exposure.

"Also, to answer a common question about why I “do abstracts,” I prefer not to reproduce something I have seen because somehow that reproduction diminishes the vitality of the final sculpture. Allowing a form to evolve (from my own subconscious, admittedly) through the carving of the stone leaves the final form fresh and alive for me and hopefully for the wider audience.

"Please check this Page occasionally for upcoming events and possible other things of interest. My work can currently be seen at Withywindle Gallery in Guerneville and intermittently at the Bodega Landmark Studio in Bodega, California.”
